Patient Participation Group
The first meeting of this group took place on March 6th 2006 and we have met quarterly since that date. The group comprises of both patients and practice staff.
Past meetings have offered opportunities for group members to comment on and ask questions about practice, community and national health related issues from the patients’ point of view. They have also included presentations on services related to Health, Well Being and Social Care, from both Practice staff and other organisations.
Some of our patient group members have also volunteered to act as “helpers” at various events. During the opening few weeks of our new surgery they acted as patient guides and looked very fetching in their Green “Patient Helper” sashes! They have also helped with the annual Practice survey and have promoted the Patient Group at a variety of community and health events.
At our February 2011 meeting, we decided it was time to take another look at where the Patient Group was going. The Chair produced a paper as the starting point for a discussion. We also invited the NHS Bristol lead for Public Involvement along to talk to us about how patients could interact with practices in ways which are more responsive to the needs of more patients. The model which had most appeal, for the group members present, was the one that offers more patient led support for other patients, especially those living with chronic conditions.
The group has developed and changed over the years but the ethos remains the same- a group led by patients, for patients, with the aim of helping the Practice deliver an outstanding service. We now meet quarterly in the Greenway Centre and current projects include helping to improve “Self Care” within the Practice through different media such as the TV in the waiting room and notice boards. The group has also agreed to help the Practice look at ways of reducing Do Not Attend rates at the Practice. We are also looking at ways of expanding on our already successful “Flu Day” by offering other educational events or meetings throughout the year. The next one will be called “Breathe Easy” and will be advertised for any interested patients who may suffer from, or know or care for someone who suffers from, a breathing disorder such as asthma or COPD.
A wider group has been formed by patients who have agreed to be contacted by the Practice as an online group. This allows patients who are unable to attend the meetings to be involved and allows us to perform surveys and get feedback from a more representative cross section of our Practice population.

The surgery is open 8.00am – 7pm from Monday-Thursday and 8.00am – 6.30pm Friday.
